Everything Happened In Vietnam The Year of the Rat eBook Robert Peter Thompson

In "Everything Happened in Vietnam: The Year of the Rat", Robert Peter Thompson has given us a glimpse of what the war looked like through his eyes. It is very authentic. This book reads much like sitting and hearing Mr. Thompson tell his story. The stream of consciousness style lends itself well to the confusion of war. His conversational writing is pleasant. It's like sitting in a bar and listening to an old friend relate his memories. At times, I became a little lost but I'd keep reading. Then I'd say to myself,"That was well done!" I especially liked the little updates at end of some of the chapters.

I enjoyed this book. It's good to find more Vietnam veterans telling their personal stories. Our history is made up of millions of regular people. Real history isn't made by famous generals and presidents. It's made of regular people like Mr. Thompson. Too often, nobody knows about it except the people who were next to them. This book very clearly shows the struggles to mentally survive the war. I'm sure it was cathartic for Mr. Thompson to tell us his story. I thank him for sharing it with all of us.

Everything Happened In Vietnam The Year of the Rat eBook Robert Peter Thompson Reviews

Written with the "don't give a damn" attitude that seemed to invade everyone who spent time in that Hellhole. Although describing some terribly horrific and terrifying events, Mr. Thompson still managed to inject just the right amount of humor at critical junctures to keep what would be a horrific and saddening event into a bearable recording of a significant and brutal event. The book suffers from an almost manic lack of a consistent recounting of events in chronological order. But the author can be forgiven the studied disregard for proper sequencing by the very bantering that so makes this book a required reading. Get a copy for yourself and discover a great book that puts just a little relaxing into an otherwise unbearable situated.
After the years of analysis, explanations and excuses from scholars, ex-generals, and politicos, we're finally beginning to hear from the men who actually fought the war in Vietnam. Mr. Thompson has given us an up-close look at the inside of the war, from the bunkers to the hill-tops. His vivid imagery and stream of consciousness style unite to bring the moments of terror and wonder to life. As a Vietnam veteran of combat myself, I salute him for his honesty and observation. Everything and anything did happen in Vietnam, and it really was a lifetime compressed into one year.
This book should be of great interest to anyone interested in the war in Vietnam or military history in general.
again how can not thank a vet for what he gave up , just to protect the freedom of our country. robert thompson was put in one of the most dangerous places to be. it is such that a war takes the innocent boys from different parts of the world and makes men of them before their time. what they see done to the men after the bombs go off is something no one wants to see. you never forget it, then there was agent orange, the va and the government never wanting to help the vets. so sorry it took so many years for the government to finally help with there problems. reading this book also makes me think of the book flags of our father , by james bradley. just another reason to be proud of our servicemen, so hang those flags for them, and give them the support they deserve.
I read, Everything Happened In Vietnam more out of curiosity than any passion for war stories. In fact, I was never interested in reading of the horrors of war except for World War 2, which happened and ended before I was born. That war was far enough away from my life to seem unreal, and that made it okay to read about. However, Vietnam took place during my life, and it hurt to hear what little I did know, which somehow I managed to block out of my mind. Until I met veterans online in a writing discussion group, who made me understand what survival truly is and what being forced to meet courage, truly means. These men were kids!

Robert Peter Thompson took me into the belly of a monster I never expected to contemplate, and he does it with a calm informal tone as he describes the horrors of a war that turned his life into a temporary unreal nightmare that walks beside him to this day requesting his attention. He describes some of his experiences in the center of what he calls a "Labyrinth." In the tangle of a jungle where men were being commanded, to trade safety for torture, and do it willingly Thompson explains what most vets cannot talk about.
He speaks bluntly of his dead guests in foxholes that asked him to oblige the horror of the sight and smell of them, without the reality of it flooding his soul, his mind and his compassion. He leaves no stone unturned in his narration of what war truly is. He brings you to the days and nights, which seem indifferent to life itself in a nightmare so unimaginable no one could ever dream it unless they witnessed it.

Thompson manages somehow between the renditions of his experience in hell war to report humorous incident about a soldier who stumbled to attention while his pants were falling down, and how a Vietnamese woman named Lina laughed in Vietnamese.

Thompson's conclusion brings you to memorialize the lives of his friends who did not come home, but more than this, his story clearly makes you swallow hard the reason why Vietnam Vets do not talk about it. However, he reminds us all, this fact "I am here, I am still here, and you will look at me, for I will never go away."
